The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees women's hockey team (3-9) upset the U SPORTS third-ranked McGill Martlets (9-3) at the Minto Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon, to earn their first win of the new year.
Thanks to a strong team performance, along with particularly great goaltending, the Gee-Gees will hope to use the 2-0 win to spark a run to playoff contention.
The first period was largely controlled by the Martlets but, they couldn't solve Gee-Gees keeper Maude Lévesque-Ryan as she made multiple in-close saves on breakaways and two-on-one opportunities.
The Gee-Gees started to gain confidence in the later parts of the period after a great give-and-go in the corner lead to a scramble in-front of the net, Mélodie Bouchard finished off the play scoring the Gee-Gees first goal of the afternoon.
The goal was particularly meaningful as it showed signs of an offensive wake up for Ottawa, it stood as Bouchard's first goal of the season after scoring eight times last year.
After a clean first period, the second period was undisciplined from both teams, as both teams had multiple chances on the powerplay, but neither team could convert.
The third period saw more powerplays, but this time Ottawa was able to capitalize off a great feed from Bouchard to captain Mélina Roy in front of the net. The Martlets made a final push, but were unable to finish any scoring chances.
Lévesque-Ryan was fantastic in net as she kept the door shut throughout the game while facing 36 shots, frustrating Martlet players throughout.
The Gee-Gees will look to continue to turn the tides on their season with another matchup against the Martlets next Saturday at the Minto Sports Complex. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m.
