RECAP: Women’s hockey wins Alerts Cup, collects three of four points on weekend

The Gee-Gees women's hockey team earned their first points of the season, pushing the nationally ranked McGill Martlets to overtime, then defeating the Carleton Ravens in the Alerts Cup for their first victory of the season. 

NOVEMBER 1 at. McGILL

In their first of three trips this season to McConnell Arena, the Gee-Gees collected their first point of the season, following a 3-2 overtime loss.

McGill opened the scoring just three minutes into the contest, but Alexe Drouin was quick to respond for the Gee-Gees. Her quick shot sailed past the McGill goaltender for her first of the season midway through the first period.

The Martlets restored their lead in the second period. Kate Maclean answered back for the Gee-Gees just two minutes later with her first career goal in Garnet and Grey.

Following a back-and-forth third period, the team advanced to a five-minute four-on-four overtime. 

Despite plenty of chances for Ottawa, they were unable to bury a game winning goal. Just 12 seconds into the three-on-three overtime, McGill broke through to win the game.

Jennifer Walker stopped 36 of 39 shots she faced in her first start of the season.

NOVEMBER 3 at CARLETON

Just one minute into the contest, the Gee-Gees took the lead, with Alice Fillion converting early in their first power play opportunity.

Jade Todd extend the lead early in the second period with her first goal in Garnet and Grey.

Carleton cut into the lead at the midway point of the second period, scoring on the power play to pull within one.

The Gee-Gees were heavily outshot by a margin of 17-2 in the second period, but Aurélie Dubuc was a calming presence in goal.

With just four minutes remaining in regulation, Fillion pounced on a loose puck during a scramble to extend the lead.

Carleton pulled the goaltender in hopes of igniting a comeback, but Ariane Aubin skated the puck up ice and dished to Fillion to complete the hat trick and secure the Alerts Cup.

"For us it wasn't our best game for sure this year, Carleton had a really good second period. In the first and the third, we were good. That does show how much competition we get in the RSEQ. We need to be ready to grind, to sacrifice every day. The way to get there is repeating habits every day. It starts at practice, in the gym. … We changed a few things this week on the power play. STATS AT A GLANCE

• Alice Fillion scored her first career hat trick against Carleton on Sunday. Fillion is now tied for the RSEQ lead for goals scored, and second in total points. 
• Aurélie Dubuc earned her first career win with a 22-save performance against Carleton.
• The Gee-Gees scored their first power play goal of the season against Carleton, going one-for-four in the contest.
