SERIES RECAP: Women’s hockey edged out by Bishop’s Gaiters in RSEQ Playoffs
The University of Ottawa women's hockey team has bowed out of the RSEQ playoffs following a 2-1 series loss against the Gaiters in the consolation bracket. The Gaiters beat the Gee-Gees at the Minto Sports Complex on Mar. 20, 3-2, to eliminate Gee-Gees and advance to the bronze medal game.
The Gee-Gees hosted the series opener, on Thursday, Mar. 17 and found themselves quickly behind in the series thanks to a 4-0 loss. Looking to level the series, the Gee-Gees travelled to Lennoxville, Que., for game two. It was a much stronger showing by the Garnet and Grey who flipped the script, emerging 4-0 victors. Kylie Lalonde and Alyssa MacMillian connected twice, with Ariane Minville and Katherine Birkby also finding the back of the net. Aurélie Dubuc stopped an impressive 27 shots en route to the shutout, her first of the playoffs.
A deciding game was needed back in the nation's capital the next day. Three goals in the second period saw the Bishop's through the series – including two from Neleh Vigneau Sargeant. Jade Todd and Sophie Gareau both found the back of the net, but the Gee-Gees could not overcome the three-goal deficit.
The series ends the 2021-22 campaign for the University of Ottawa. A young team, there is a lot that Gee-Gees head coach, Chelsea Grills will take from this season and look to build upon when the puck drops again next fall.
