The Gee-Gees women's hockey team dropped both their games over the weekend, losing 2-1 to Carleton on Thursday evening and 2-0 to the second-ranked Concordia Stingers Sunday afternoon.
"We're taking the season one game at a time," said Gee-Gees head coach Chelsea Grills. "We learn from these games and we're building momentum going into three straight home games before the holiday break."
The team got off to a frustrating start to the weekend, losing a tightly fought game to the Carleton Ravens. After a back and forth first period, Carleton opened the scoring in the second when a rebound fell favourably for Claudia Hennigan. The Ravens would add another before the period ended.
Despite valiant effort, and a late Viki Harkness goal, the Garnet and Grey headed to Concordia looking to bounce back and retain top spot in the RSEQ.
On Sunday the Stingers had a strong first period, scoring two goals against the Gee-Gees to give them an early lead. Although the Gee-Gees could not seem to find the back of the net, Alyssa Biesenthal stood out offensively with a few quick scoring opportunities against the Stingers goaltender.
Teams battled back and forth in the neutral zone throughout the second period, where neither team added to the scoreboard. Aurélie Dubuc had a good showing overall, saving a few pucks left creeping towards the goal line. A game highlight for Dubuc was where she pounced on an open shot by the Stingers to deny a late goal in the third period.
Despite a couple power play chances, the Gee-Gees were unable to break the Stingers defense, leaving the score at 2-0.
The Gee-Gees will return to Ottawa next weekend to play Bishop's and Montreal on home ice. Saturday's game against the Gaiters is the Mélisa Kingsley Memorial Game. Tickets for both matchups are on sale at tickets.geegees.ca.
