The Gee-Gees women's hockey team saw back-to-back shootout victories on home ice this weekend against the Bishop's Gaiters (3-2) and Montréal Carabins (3-2).
On Saturday the Gee-Gees hosted the annual Mélisa Kingsley Memorial Game at Minto Sports Complex. Here, the team got back into the groove with a victory against the Bishop's Gaiters.
The Gee-Gees showed up offensively strong in the first period as they dominated possession, yet they left the period tied at no score.
In the second period we saw a quick succession of goals; there were three goals in ten minutes of play. Abygail Moloughney got her ninth goal of the season to open the scoring. Kathleen Reedman was not far behind, scoring on the power play to add to the Gee-Gees side. However, Bishop's stroked back not too long after to make it 2-1.
The crowd was kept on the edge of their seats as Bishop's then sent the game into overtime with a late power play goal in the third period.
The score remained tied after two periods of overtime, leaving the game to be determined by a shootout. Moloughney came through as the third shooter, scoring the winning goal through the goaltender's five-hole.
On Sunday the Gee-Gees saw a slower start to the game, where Montréal kicked off the scoring with a goal in the first period.
In the second period Viki Harkness turned things around for the Gee-Gees with a power play marker. Alyssa Biesenthal then capitalized on their momentum, scoring another goal only one minute later to put the Gee-Gees out front before the end of the period.
Montréal scored in the third period to tie it up, sending the game into overtime. The Gee-Gees saw a similar scene to Saturday, where two periods of overtime without any goals led them to decide the game in a shootout.
Alyssa Biesenthal had a stand-out performance, scoring two shootout goals to secure the second win of the weekend for the Gee-Gees.
"It was good to get two wins before the New Year," said Biesenthal. "Our team's confidence is now building back up as we head into our game next week."
The Gee-Gees will be back at home next weekend against McGill to close out the first half of the season. Tickets are on sale at tickets.geegees.ca.
