RECAP: Women’s hockey earns huge win over the Ravens, Sarrazin records first shutout of the season
The Gee-Gees women's hockey team played host to their rivals on Saturday night. Welcoming the Carleton Ravens to Minto Sports Complex, the Gee-Gees played a fast-paced, high-pressure game, earning a 5-0 win in the first rivalry matchup of the season.
Jennifer Wakefield and Greg Bowles logged their first win at the helm of the Gee-Gees.
Keara Merriman scored her first regular season goal in the Garnet and Grey to get the scoring started for the evening. 30 seconds into the second period, Merriman was given space in front of the net, a quick feed and she sent the puck straight into the mesh.
Kylie Lalonde and Florence Lessard each added goals for Ottawa, but Alyssa Biesenthal led the way with a pair of impressive shots to add to the 5-0 victory.
"We're happy we're getting production for lots of players but I'm also really happy with the overall effort on all three phases of the game," said Wakefield
The standout performance belonged to Gee-Gees goaltender, Mahika Sarrazin. The Ravens were unable to get the puck past Sarrazin, even with a 5-on-3 opportunity in the third period. Sarrazin logged 27 saves for the shutout victory.
"[Sarrazin] played phenomenal, she was locked in, she is a veteran presence on the team and the girls play with a lot of confidence in her," said Wakefield. "I thought our D played really well, pushing pucks to outside and giving our forwards some cushion to take risks on offence."
The Gee-Gees are on the road for the first time this season. They're headed to Montreal for a Thursday night meeting with McGill, and will be back in Ottawa on Sunday, Oct. 29 to host Bishop's University. Sunday's puck-drop is a 2 p.m. and tickets are available at https://teams.geegees.ca/tickets.
