RECAP: Ondo shines, #3 women’s rugby downs Vert & Or
Alexandra Ondo scored early and often for the Gee-Gees, as the uOttawa women's rugby team beat the Sherbrooke Vert & Or 58-7 Friday evening at Stade de l'Université in Sherbrooke, Que.
Ondo accounted for four of the Gee-Gees nine tries. The fifth-year from Gatineau, Que., now has nine tries on the year, three more than any other player in the conference. Ondo found paydirt twice in the first half and twice in the second.
Claire Gallagher turned in another dominant display. The third-year Health Sciences student packed the stats sheet, scoring 23 points (two tries, five converts and a penalty). Gallagher is unsurprisingly leading the RSEQ in scoring with 60 points. Ondo ranks second with 45.
The Gee-Gees opened the scoring inside the first five minutes when Ngozi Mosindi scored her first career try. In addition to Ondo, Gallagher and Mosdini, Tylo Borsboom and Taylor Donato reached the end zone for Ottawa.
Second row Meredith Sirrs was selected as the match MVP.
Ottawa's win, coupled with Concordia losing 49-3 to Laval, puts Ottawa in an excellent position to host a playoff game. The Gee-Gees can remove all doubt and clinch second place in RSEQ Section A (which comes with a first round bye and a home playoff date) by beating Concordia next week. Losing to Concordia by fewer than 49 points would also guarantee the Gee-Gees second place.
The Ottawa-Concordia matchup is slated for Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1:00 p.m. at Concordia Stadium in Montreal. The first round of the RSEQ playoffs goes Saturday, Oct. 23 with the semifinals taking place the following week.
