RECAP: #4 Women’s rugby cruises to win over Bishop’s
Eleven Gee-Gees made their way onto the scoresheet as the University of Ottawa cruised to a 104-3 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters.
Mercedes Cole led the way with four tries, while Ketsia Kamba got three of her own. Claire Gallagher converted nine tries for 18 total points.
"Right now, we're just focusing on building and building towards Nationals," said front row Anna Dodge. "For us it's not so much about the score, it's about how we're using our systems and how we're playing together. I think that's improving week-to-week."
The game was presented in partnership with the University of Ottawa's Mashkawazìwogamig Indigenous Resource Centre. Performances at halftime by throat singers Annie Aningmiuq and Tracy Sarazin, and hoop dancer Celina Cada-Matasawagon, punctuated the day.
Instead of returning to their dressing room, the Gee-Gees women's rugby players and staff remained on the field to take in the halftime performances.
"We pride ourselves on collaborating with good causes – every home game this season has been a collaboration with a different cause," said Dodge, a Biomedical Science student. "It was amazing to have the Indigenous Resource Centre come out. It was spectacular and we're thankful for that."
Saturday was the first time Ottawa broke the 100-point plateau since Oct. 8, 2018, when they defeated the Gaiters 113-0.
With her four tries, Cole now leads the team with eight on the year, followed closely by Kamba with six. Gallagher continues to pace the Gee-Gees with 48 total points (two tries, 19 converts). Sarah White scored her first try of the season and earned the game MVP.
Michelle St. Laurent kicked the lone penalty for Bishop's.
Ottawa is now 4-0, having earned the offensive bonus point in all four of their victories. They remain level with the Laval Rouge & Or atop the conference standings.
The Gee-Gees are back under the lights at Matt Anthony Field to take on the Carleton Ravens (3-1) on Friday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available for purchase at tickets.geegees.ca.
