RECAP: Mosindi, Kamba score two each, #5 women’s rugby tops Carabins
The Gee-Gees women's team topped the Montreal Carabins at Matt Anthony Field Saturday afternoon, defeating the visitors 36-21.
Ngozi Mosindi and Ketsia Kamba each scored a pair of tries as Ottawa picked up their first victory of the young season.
"We wanted to try and move the ball, but at times we forgot to run forward when we were trying to do that," said Gee-Gees head coach Duncan McNaughton. "It's going to take a little time to come together, but it was a good win. Montreal came in and had a good crowd and they fought us hard."
Coming off a bye week, the Gee-Gees wasted no time getting the scoring started, with Rachel Steel darting across the try line from 10 yards out.
Mosindi then scored her first of two tries by diving into the try zone. Montreal responded with a converted score of their own, but Ottawa then rattled off two impressive tries.
First, a slick set piece routine from a lineout resulted in Kamba tumbling across the try line from a maul. Then Sophie McDonald did the heavy lifting, stiff arming a Carabin player, before passing the ball off to Mosindi who summersaulted across the line.
"They've put in a lot of work over the last two weeks on that," said McNaughton when asked about the team's set pieces. "Really pleased with that. That's coming together nicely."
Ella Blyth would add a late score – her first points of the season. Jamie Lee Walker, Aurora Bowie and Taelor Hendrick earned a convert apiece for the Gee-Gees.
The Gee-Gees (1-1) have commenced a busy stretch with three games in eight days. They'll be across town at Carleton to face the Ravens (2-0) for a midweek tilt on Thursday, Sept. 21, before receiving McGill (1-3) at Matt Anthony Field on Sunday, Sept. 24.
Kickoff for the McGill game is slated for 4:00 p.m. and tickets are on sale at geegees.ca/tickets.
Montreal (0-3) next has a home game against Bishop's (0-2) on Wednesday, Sept. 20.
