RECAP: Women’s Rugby caps off season with a fourth place U SPORTS finish
The Gee-Gees women's rugby team met with the Queen's Gaels for the U SPORTS bronze medal match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The game welcomed wind, rain, and a back-and-forth battle between two if the country's best teams.
Queen's was first in the tryzone as Mika Matsukubo raced across the wing.
The Gaels' convert was missed, and the Gee-Gees were able to claim the lead moments later with a try from Ketsia Kamba. The 3x All-Canadian's try was followed by a successful convert from Victoria Hough.
Another try from the Gaels queued an entertaining battle. Leigha Stiles added another for Ottawa, but Queen's punched one more through before halftime.
Trailing 17-12 coming out of the half, Ella Blyth sprinted across the sideline for a quick five points, tying things up at 17-17.
Hough set the Gee-Gees up for a try, breaking through the Gaels defence for a big gain. It was Stiles who touched down in the tryzone for her second of the day, making it 22-17 for Ottawa at the 65th minute.
The Gaels only took five minutes to respond, getting in for the try but missing the convert. Things were tied at 22 with only 10 minutes left to play.
In the last seconds, the Gaels took advantage of a gap in the Gee-Gees defence, sliding into the tryzone and claiming not only victory, but the U SPORTS bronze medal.
The Gee-Gees finish off their incredible season with a fourth-place finish at the national championship tournament. Alysia Comtois, Ketsia Kamba, and Sophie McDonald claimed All-Tournament Team honours to close out the 2024 season.
