A Katherine Bearne lob from 35-yards out was enough for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees women's soccer team to round out their 2018 regular season with a 1-0 victory over the Queen's Gaels.
Bearne, a senior midfielder from Halifax, made a cleaver turn in the 50th minute and struck the ball towards goal. Bearne's sky-high shot eluded the Queen's goalkeeper to give Ottawa the 1-0 advantage.
It was a flawless defensive performance from the Gee-Gees, who wrap up their regular season with a 14-1-1 record – the best in the OUA.
The wind was blowing heavily at Gee-Gees Field on Sunday afternoon, making it difficult for either team to string passes together. The Gaels, with the wind gusting at them, never troubled Ottawa goalkeeper Margot Shore in the second half. Shore registered a shutout after only needing to turn away one shot.
The Gee-Gees fielded a full-strength squad in a match that had no bearing on the standings. Ottawa and Queen's have respectively clinched first and second in their division, and both sides have earned a first-round bye in the OUA playoffs.
Ottawa will have to wait for the first-round matchups to play out before they learn the identity of their playoff opposition. Regardless of their opponent, the match will take place on Oct. 28 at Gee-Gees Field, with a scheduled start time of 1 p.m.
The University of Ottawa is hosting the U SPORTS Women's Soccer National Championship from November 8-11. The Gee-Gees have already qualified as the hosts, however their seeding will be determined by the result of the OUA Playoffs. All games will take place at Gee-Gees Field.
