A header from Trinity Esprit late in the second half was the difference maker for the Gee-Gees women's soccer team, as the team was able to secure a 1-0 win over the Carleton Ravens at MNP Park on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm relieved, and happy with our performance," said head coach Steve Johnson following the game. "Relieved that we got the result that we needed, and I'm happy with the way the team played. I thought we got better as the game wore on. We knew we were looking for a goal and the team responded in a positive way."
The Gee-Gees controlled the pace of play from the opening minute of the contest. In the first-half, they outshot the Ravens by a margin of 6-0.
In the second half, Carleton's defence bunkered down, allowing the Gee-Gees to control the ball but blocking numerous shots and forcing the play to the edges of the field.
Esprit finally broke through in the 77th minute, with a cross from Emma Lefebvre finding her in the box, and heading the ball into the back of the net.
"I think a lot of the habits that we try to bring out in training camp were reflected on the field during game time," Johnson said.
In the final moments of the contest, Carleton pressured up the field in hopes of forcing a draw, but a spectacular save from goalkeeper Margot Shore clinched a Garnet and Grey victory.
With the win, the Gee-Gees improved to 9-0-2 on the season, and remain tied with the Queen's Gaels for first place in the OUA East.
With only three games to go on the regular season, every result matters as the team battles for home field advantage in the playoffs.
This upcoming weekend, they'll travel to Toronto to take on the Ryerson Rams at 1:00 p.m. on October 13. The following weekend they'll host the Toronto Varsity Blues and Rams on October 19 and 20.
"We need to win all three, but I think even more important than that, we want to finish with good performances going into playoffs," Johnson said. "It's important to get the results, but not at the sacrifice of how we want to play."
