The Gee-Gees women's soccer team finished their regular season undefeated thanks to back-to-back 1-0 victories over the Toronto Varsity Blues and Ryerson Rams at Gee-Gees Field this weekend.
The wins improve the Gee-Gees record to 12-0-2 on the campaign. Their record is identical to that of the Queen's Gaels, but Ottawa's superior goal differential secures them first in the conference.
"We wanted to go undefeated this year," said head coach Steve Johnson. "We also had it as a goal to eliminate as many goal scoring opportunities as possible and we did that this weekend. We defend from front to back and we've been really pleased with how the team has jelled since the beginning of the year."
Mikayla Morton, who set the record for most goals in a regular season by a Gee-Gees player earlier this season, found the back of the net within the first ten minutes on Saturday against the Varsity Blues.
Margot Shore made four saves, all in the second half, and ends the year with nine clean sheets.
Morton also got the goal in the dominant performance over the Rams. Her first-time shot off a cross from Becca Leblanc found the cobwebs, giving the Gee-Gees a lead they would not relinquish.
"It's a good feeling, we have to keep up our reputation from last year," said Morton, who finishes her regular season with 17 goals. "We did well and achieved that. It was an interesting goal. I looked at [Becca] and we were both shocked it went in. Ultimately, a goal's a goal and we were able to get the win."
Ryerson failed to notch a shot attempt in the game, although Shore did make a critical, sliding intervention to disrupt a late Rams attack during second half stoppage time.
"I'm feeling optimistic," said Johnson. "I know that we've had a good season and we've got a really nice style of play. I'm sure we can continue to play as well as we have during the regular season."
Ottawa will host a playoff game at Gee-Gees Field on Sunday, October 27. The time of the game and the opponent are to be determined.
Prior to the game on Sunday, the Gee-Gees honoured their five graduating seniors; Margot Shore, Katherine Bearne, Théa Nour, Emma Lefebvre and Gabrielle Emilien.
