RECAP: #3 Women’s soccer onto semis, will face Queen’s
The Gee-Gees women's soccer team kept their composure and defeated the Rams 2-0 Wednesday evening at Matt Anthony Field.
The win secures Ottawa a spot in the OUA semi-final, and they will welcome the Queen's Gaels to Matt Anthony Field this Saturday. The winner of that match secures a spot in the OUA Championship game and the U SPORTS National Championship.
"It was a game that you could see meant a lot to both teams," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "It was a physical affair, no doubt. I thought our team held their composure really well. We still left a little bit to be desired in our game management."
Ottawa got on the board in the first half with Angelina Gendreau timing her run perfectly and receiving a ball from Emma Lefebvre. Gendreau made no mistake slotting it past Rams goalkeeper Elisa Lapadula to open the scoring.
The Gee-Gees doubled their lead moments later with Cassandra Provost rising to meet a well-delivered Adriane Devlin set piece and powering it into the net.
The match was a physical, stop-start confrontation. The Rams racked up four yellow cards, two of which went to Savahnna Robinson, meaning the visitors were down a player for the majority of the second half. Another Ram getting sent to the "sin bin" for the final 10 minutes led the game to end at 11 versus nine.
Ottawa turn their attention to the Queen's Gaels, who defeated the Guelph Gryphons 2-0 in their quarterfinal matchup. The Gee-Gees and Gaels played a thriller when the teams met during the regular season, with Ottawa winning 2-1 at Matt Anthony Field.
"We just play one game at a time," said Lefebvre, looking ahead to the Queen's game. "We don't pump ourselves up about being undefeated or anything. We know that every team come playoffs are equal, and there's only one winner."
The semi-final match goes Saturday at noon at Matt Anthony Field. Tickets are on sale at tickets.geegees.ca.
