Earning two lopsided road wins to open their season, the Gee-Gees women's soccer team wasted no time showing the type of team they will be this year.
In a 4-1 win against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon, the Gee-Gees scored early and often throughout the first half. In the 3rd minute of the young season, Cassandra Provost scored on a feed from Trinity Esprit to give Ottawa the early lead.
In the 16th minute, defender Maya Smith showed her offensive prowess to extend the lead for the Gee-Gees. Ottawa would continue their onslaught in the 19th minute, as Nibo Dlamini converted a penalty kick. Katie Brzozowski rounded out the scoring for the Gee-Gees in the 35th minute, after a long-distance blast beat the Toronto keeper.
The second half was a more evenly played affair as the teams settled in for the final 45 minutes of action. In the dying seconds of the game, Toronto's Hannah Chown was able to beat Ottawa keeper Cassidy Joslin on a free kick for their lone score of the game.
On Sunday, the Gee-Gees took on the newly named Toronto Metropolitan Bold, and in a near carbon copy result came away with a 5-1 victory to close the weekend.
In the 4th minute of action, Angelina Gendreau had her first of three assists on the afternoon, finding defender Kayla Kyle streaking to the net to score her first goal in garnet and grey.
Similar to Saturday, it was not long before Ottawa found the back of the net again, as Soumaya Bouak converted her first of the season to give the Gee-Gees a 2-0 lead.
For the remainder of the first half, it was the Cassandra Provost show, scoring twice on impressive efforts to tally her second and third goals of the weekend.
Once again much like Saturday's game, TMU got their lone goal late in the contest, scoring in the 87th minute. Though their offensive output cooled in the second frame, the Gee-Gees closed the game off on a high note as first year forward Olivia Allen scored her first career goal in stoppage time.
After the first weekend of the season, the Gee-Gees hold sole possession of first place in the OUA East.
Up next, the Gee-Gees will host Queen's in their home opener at Matt Anthony Field on Friday, Sept. 9, followed by a quick rematch with the Varsity Blues on Sunday afternoon.
Tickets for both games are available at tickets.geegees.ca and will be streaming live on OUA.tv.
