Cassandra Provost broke the team record for goals in a single regular season as the Gee-Gees women's soccer team defeated the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks and Laurentian Voyageurs by 6-0 and 7-0 scores.
Provost was on a mission over the weekend, scoring twice against Ontario Tech on Friday evening and five times versus Laurentian on Sunday afternoon. Her goal total on the season is now 18, besting Mikayla Morton's record set during the 2019 campaign.
"It means a lot," said Provost of the record. "I'm going to try to break it next year too. It wasn't my goal at first, but when we realized I was close we thought 'why not'? It was fun."
Provost's record is perhaps more impressive as she achieved the feat in just nine games. Morton appeared in 14 in 2019.
The second year Accounting student from Acton Vale, Que., earned an assist on Soumaya Bouak's opening goal in the Ontario Tech game. Allana Oriente got the goal of the night however, as she flicked the ball over a rushing defender, darted some 50 yards up the pitch and then beat the goalkeeper with a perfectly placed left-footed strike.
Olivia Allen and Ella Chase also scored in the Ontario Tech match.
Sunday was more of the same for Ottawa, with Provost's goal scoring being buttressed by Angela Gendreau and Janea Mallitt finding the back of the net. Mallitt's goal came in her first career appearance in Garnet and Grey.
"The team played a low block against us, trying to deny us opportunities in and around the penalty area," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "It was fantastic Cassandra could find enough good chances, supplied by her teammates, to get into the box and get goals."
The Gee-Gees (9-1-1) settles into first place in the OUA East, four points clear of Toronto (8-2-0) and 10 points ahead of Queen's (5-0-3). Even with the games in hand, the Gee-Gees will still finish in first in the division should they win their final regular season contest.
Ottawa now shifts their focus to the FISU Americas tournament, beginning Saturday, Oct. 15 in Mexico. A portion of the team will remain in Canada to play RMC on Sunday, Oct. 23.
