The Gee-Gees women's soccer team split a home weekend against Toronto and TMU losing 1-0 to the Varsity Blues on Saturday before bouncing back against TMU with a 4-1 win on Sunday.
Saturday's loss marked Ottawa's first regular season defeat since Sept. 11, 2022, which was also a 1-0 loss to Toronto. The Varsity Blues came away victorious on a lone goal scored in the 68th minute.
On Sunday, the Gee-Gees bounced back with an energetic performance against Toronto Metropolitan to earn a dominant win.
Ottawa defender Maya Smith scored twice in the first 21 minutes, burying a penalty kick in the 16th minute, before capitalizing on a scramble in front of the net following a free kick in the 21st minute.
Jenna Matsukubo kicked off the second half with a goal in the 48th minute to put the Gee-Gees up 3-0. Just over 10 minutes later, Cassandra Provost scored her seventh goal of the season to extend the Ottawa lead.
The Bold would get a goal back in the 64th minute. The Gee-Gees continued to pour it on offensively for the remainder of the game but were unable to further extend their lead.
After the weekend, the Gee-Gees remain atop the OUA East, they are tied with Nipissing at 6-1-0 but hold the tiebreaker after a win over the Lakers last weekend.
What They're Saying:
"It felt great, I'm not usually one to score, so getting two today felt really good, especially after the loss." – Maya Smith on her two-goal game.
"I thought [the team] responded well, today's game was full of energy, much better passing and much better ball winning then we saw against Toronto… Both games were learning experiences, today as much as yesterday's game." – Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson after the win over TMU.
Up Next:
Ottawa will play their final regular season game at home on Friday night at 7 p.m. with a key matchup against Nipissing. They will then take to the road for a Sunday matchup at Ontario Tech.
