RECAP: Gee-Gees make history winning third consecutive OUA Women’s Soccer Championship
OTTAWA, ON – The Ottawa Gee-Gees made history on home turf in the Nation's Capital where they clinched the 2024 OUA Women's Soccer Championship with a 4-2 win over division rivals Nipissing on Saturday.
It was a banner year for the Gee-Gees, who finished with the conference's best record, boasted the OUA East Most Valuable Player, and Coach of the Year. In the program's 30th anniversary, head coach Steve Johnson's squad etched their names in the history books with a third consecutive title. The championship win is Ottawa's OUA-best 12th overall.
Nipissing gave Ottawa a battle throughout, as they drew first blood with Cassidy Brooks scoring in the 20th minute.
The Gee-Gees responded with OUA East MVP Cassandra Provost finding twine to even the score in the 37th minute. Just three minutes later, Ottawa drew a penalty kick that Nibo Dlamini made no mistake on to put the Gee-Gees up 2-1 at halftime.
In the 58th minute, Brooks scored on a long bomb to tie the game again and give the Lakers life. The Gee-Gees jumped ahead again in the 64th minute with Jenna Matsukubo scoring on a rebound to spring Ottawa back into the lead. The Gee-Gees kept the pressure up and broke through for a final time as Élianne Gervais put the game out of reach in the 84th minute.
"I think it's really important for all the players in the program and the coaches," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson of the win.
"We've had a great season and to be able to experience situations where we go down a goal and are successful in coming back, shows our character. I'm really proud of what we've been able to accomplish."
Both Ottawa and Nipissing will be headed to Halifax for the U SPORTS Women's Soccer Championship from Nov. 7-10 at Dalhousie.
