After soundly defeating the Windsor Lancers in a 3-0 win on Oct. 20, the Gee-Gees women's volleyball team earned another 3-0 win, this time against the Western Mustangs, on Oct. 21. Against the 2011 OUA champions, the Gee-Gees were engaged in three hard-fought and closely-contested sets, with their largest margin of victory being three points. But the Gee-Gees came up clutch late in all three sets as the nationally seventh-ranked Gee-Gees improved their regular season record to 2-0.
A skilful kill by fifth-year middle Kathryn Weihrer gave uOttawa a 19-16 lead late in the first set. However, the Mustangs, who beat Brock 3-1 the day before, scored six straight points to take a 22-19 advantage. In the end, third-year attacker Karina Krueger Schwanke carried her team to a narrow 25-23 victory in the first set by scoring three key points which stopped Western's momentum. Schwanke was the leading scorer for the match, scoring 20 points on 17 kills, two service aces and a block.
The Gee-Gees started the second set on a 12-5 run, with Schwanke and third-year hitter Myriam English providing much of the offence. The Mustangs clawed back to take a slim 16-15 lead by scoring 11 of the next 14 points. Ottawa was on the verge of dropping the second set, down 26-25, but a kill and a service ace by Weihrer, combined with a Mustangs error, led to a thrilling 28-26 victory.
"I would have to credit our team blocking and serve with the 'player of the game' nod today. We were not as in sync today as we could be and the Mustangs pushed back hard even when we were up by seven points in the second to keep every set close right down to the wire," said Gee-Gees head coach Lionel Woods.
And while Western scored the first four points of the third set, uOttawa successfully closed out the sweep with a 25-22 win in the final set of play. Schwanke scored nine points in the third set, while the final Ottawa point was scored off a crucial block by third-year attacker Kelsie English.
Ottawa will go on their final road trip of the semester next weekend, when they face Waterloo and McMaster on Oct. 27 and 28.
