After winning 11 of 13 games in the preseason, the Gee-Gees women's volleyball team was able to carry their momentum into the regular season as uOttawa defeated Windsor 3-0 on the road. This match marked the regular season opener for the nationally seventh-ranked Gee-Gees. Ottawa also beat the Lancers on the road last season by the same 3-0 score.
The upset-minded Lancers started the match on a strong note as they took an early 8-6 lead in the first set. However, Ottawa went on a 10-4 run to take a 16-12 lead at the technical timeout. The Gee-Gees
closed out the first set without any further hitches, winning 25-19. Ottawa had an extremely efficient offence with an impressive kill percentage of 0.369. Gee-Gees ended up scoring 39 kills and committing only eight attack errors in the match.
The Gee-Gees learned their lesson from the first set and started the second set with much more intensity, taking an early 7-2 lead. The Gee-Gees never let up, taking a 19-10 lead and finishing the set with a 25-16 win. The Gee-Gees had 10 service aces, characteristic for a program that has been one of the best serving teams in the CIS for the past few seasons.
And in the third and final set of play, Ottawa got off to 8-4 and 16-8 leads, before winning in a blowout, 25-13.
"Although we only had nine available players for the game, everyone contributed and we had a strong showing on the road for the first win of the season," said Gee-Gees head coach Lionel Woods.
Ottawa will now face the Western Mustangs in London, Ont., on October 21st at 1 p.m.
