uOttawa's Karina Krueger Schwanke (Blumenau, Brazil) is the OUA female player of the year. The honour, which is awarded to the student-athlete who receives the most first team all-star votes, is new this season. A native of Blumenau, Brazil, Krueger Schwanke led the second-place Gee-Gees in both kills (3.95) and points (4.64) per set, ranking her first in the OUA and top five in the CIS in both statistical categories. The third-year left side hitter also posted 26 service aces and 166 digs. Krueger Schwanke is also a first team all-star, for the second time in her career.
The Gee-Gees also dominate the second team all-stars, with three student-athletes earning recognition. Along with fourth-year setter Christina Grail, both English twins received a nod this year - Kelsie for the first time and Myriam for the third straight season.
The move from middle paid off for Kelsie English as she flourished on the right side, recording a career high in blocks. Averaging 1.2 blocks per set, Kelsie ranked sixth in the CIS this season in blocking. She also led the Gee-Gees in service aces this season, with 27 aces in 61 sets played.
Left side hitter Myriam English makes her third appearance on the all-star list thanks to her excellent all-around play this year. The third-year hitter racked up 160 kills while also demonstrating her defensive skills, tallying 175 digs.
Ottawa's setter Christina Grail is a second team all-star for the second consecutive season. The London, Ont. native played in all but five of Ottawa's 67 sets this season and averaged 9.10 assists per game. That rate ranks her sixth in the CIS this season.
The Gee-Gees finished the regular season with a record of 16-2, marking the best winning percentage of Lionel Woods' 21 years as head coach of the team.
The Gee-Gees return to the OUA Final Four for the third straight season. Watch their semifinal match against the Ryerson Rams live on Friday at 8 p.m. on SSN Canada.
