RECAP: Martlets rally for victory at Montpetit
The Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team won an exciting opening set before the McGill Martlets rallied for three straight wins and the match at Montpetit Hall on Sunday afternoon at Montpetit Hall.
The Gee-Gees women's volleyball team won an exciting opening set before the McGill Martlets rallied for three straight wins and the match at Montpetit Hall on Sunday afternoon at Montpetit Hall. McGill finished strong in the second and third sets before taking firm control of the fourth set early, winning (23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-11).
The first set of the game was tight, with both teams fighting hard. McGill started off the game with a 12-9 lead but the Gee-Gees quickly pushed back. Keeping most of the set tied and close in the score the Gee-Gees managed to pull out a 25 -23 win of the first set with help from key players Caroline Lemay and Tristan Peterson. Both contributed to the win with blocks and each had a total of four kills. Milana Grahovac was also an early blocking force for Ottawa in the middle.
The Garnet and Grey then took a three-point lead early in the second but was eclipsed by McGill at the 16 point mark with the score 16-15. Lemay had seven kills, but the team fell short with only one block and a total attacking percentage of .147.
In the third set, McGill started with the lead but Gee-Gees quickly tied it with 12-12. Ottawa held a lead at 15-14 before McGill, aided by five kills from fifth-year left side Emilie Matte de Grasse, quickly took over and won the third set 25-19. Matte de Grasse finished the match with 12 kills and 15.5 points to lead the Martlets.
McGill overtook the Gee-Gees in the fourth set with a 16-6 lead, finishing the set with a win of 25-11. McGill finished the match with ten total blocks and 12 service aces.
Lemay led all players with 16.5 points in the match: she totaled 14 kills, two aces, and 10 digs. Tristan Peterson provided good support in the attack with a percentage of .400 and 13 kills.
The Gee-Gees travel next weekend, playing Saturday, October 27 against Université du Québec à Montréal at 2 p.m.
