WEEKEND RECAP: Gee-Gees open regular season against UQAM and Montreal

Despite a valiant fight in their home opener, the Gee-Gees fell to the Citadins 3-2 in the fifth and final set. On Sunday, they did not fair as well, falling 3-0 to the Carabins.
On Friday, an exciting atmosphere at Montpetit Hall welcomed the start of the RSEQ regular season. The Gee-Gees jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the first set, before UQAM responded, the Gee-Gees made a final push getting within one point late in the set, but ultimately the Citadins took the first set 25-19,
The Gee-Gees responded in the second set, progressively building a lead throughout, UQAM made a push, but the Gee-Gees were able to fight them off and win the second set 25-21. The third set was a closely contested one, with the Citadins pulling away late to take the 25-20 win.
In the fourth set, the Gee-Gees showed great heart, keeping their hopes alive with an outstanding back-and-forth set. Fourth-year outsider hitter Niève Séguin served an ace for the team's 23rd point of the set, which they quickly followed up with two more points to take the set 25-23 heading into the fifth and final set.
The two teams battled evenly though the first 10 points of the first to 15 set, however the Citadins ultimately pulled away winning the set 15-12 and sealing the 3-2 win on the night.
Looking to carry some positive momentum into their second match of the weekend, the Gee-Gees hit the road to take on Montreal on Sunday afternoon.
Unfortunately for the Gee-Gees, they ran into a well-prepared five-time consecutive RSEQ champion Carabins team. Though the team showed great resolve throughout, they were outmatched and lost in three straight sets, 25-12, 25-16, and 25-11.
Up next, the Gee-Gees will travel to Quebec City for a matchup with the 1-1 Laval Rouge et Or, a team that the Gee-Gees defeated once last season. On Saturday, the team will make their way back to Montreal for a rematch with the Carabins.
