The Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team fell in straight sets to the McGill Martlets on November 3.
The Gee-Gees women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the McGill Martlets on November 3.
The game marked the first meeting between the two this season. They'll face-off once more on Friday when the Martlets travel to Ottawa to take on the Gee-Gees at Montpetit Hall.
The first set of the game was tightly contested, with the Martlets narrowly taking it by a margin of 25-23.
"We played one solid set today," said head coach Lionel Woods following the game. "Set one we went in front and stayed in front until 21-17. We played complete, confident, aggressive and quite dominant, but something changed at that point
"We under performed in one or two items per rally and seemed to get 'stuck' on that unconsciously," he said. "We really played well to start, and looked like we could maintain, but we hit a road bump late in game one and couldn't get back to 'full speed' for some reason."
In the second set, McGill pulled away with a 25-11 score. While the Gee-Gees fought hard to battle back in the third set, McGill prevailed 25-18 to claim victory.
The Martlets were most effective with their kills in the third set, generating 17 on 26 attempts.
Kara Hayes led the way for the Gee-Gees with eight kills and 11 digs in the game.
"For set two and three we just simply struggled to find our 'mojo' again as a team," Woods said. "This team has skill and character, this team has athleticism and depth, this team has work ethic and a genuine caring of each other. What this team needs now, is more time in competition together so they can overcome obstacles, see how good they can be together and ultimately learn how to 'win together'."
Despite the loss, there's plenty of positives for the Gee-Gees to build on heading into upcoming games.
"This team will find a way to show this conference what they are capable of — they will win soon and when they do, they will keep winning," Woods stressed. "Our coaches and support staff believe in this team and it's players — we will make a run that few may see coming!"
