The Gee-Gees battled but lost two hard fought matches against the UQAM Citadins (25-17, 25-14, 25-20) and McGill Martlets (25-13, 25-15, 25-13), both in straight sets.
The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees battled but lost two hard fought matches against the UQAM Citadins (25-17, 25-14, 25-20) and McGill Martlets (25-13, 25-15, 25-13), both in straight sets.
JAN 18 vs UQAM
The Gee-Gees and Citadins fought back-and-forth in the first set with neither team able to gain a sizable lead. A block by Portia Cooper and ace from Dana Bulloch were instrumental in keeping the set tight before the Citadins pulled away to win the first set.
The Gee-Gees fell behind early in the second and weren't able to get a run of their own, falling 25-14. The third set started similarly to the second but five-straight Ottawa points capped off by a Niève Seguin ace proved that the Gee-Gees had some resiliency. The teams would continue to trade points but UQAM would take the set and the match.
The offense featured new and familiar faces with veterans Kara Hayes and Bulloch, along with rookie Cooper getting most of the team's kills. The defense was a well rounded effort with nine different players registering digs.
JAN 19 vs McGILL
The Martlets came into Ottawa determined to snap a four-game losing skid. Hayes and Seguin led the Ottawa attack with huge kills and clever roll-shots, but the Gee-Gees fell in the first set.
The second and third sets were similar in that the Gee-Gees hung onto the Martlets before eventually losing steam. Avery Hughes and Trinity Lusan had highlight reel kills, catching the McGill defenders off guard.
Hughes and Hayes commanded the offense with five kills a-piece. The defense was again a team effort with another nine players chipping in digs.
