RECAP: UQAM tops Gee-Gees women’s volleyball in Montreal
Despite an encouraging opening set, the Gee-Gees women's volleyball team was defeated by the UQAM Citadins Sunday afternoon at the Centre Sportif de l'UQAM in Montreal.
UQAM took the match three sets to one, winning it 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-20.
Ottawa jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and maintained control throughout the first set. The final point featured a dramatic, lengthy rally that eventually saw a Citadins player send the ball wide, giving the Garnet and Grey the opening frame by a 25-20 score. Rookie middle Janae McKay was a standout in the first set, facing off with the physical Citadins middles.
The Gee-Gees enjoyed another strong start to the second set, but UQAM came into their own, rattling off seven unanswered points to take the lead. Ottawa battled back, taking a 23-22 advantage, however the Citadins took the set 25-23, evening the match.
Errors took their toll on uOttawa in the third set, but the Gee-Gees showed a lot of character in the fourth frame, hanging with the hosts throughout. The score was tight straight to the end, but consecutive aces gave UQAM a 19-17 lead. Ottawa kept it close, but the Citadins eventually closed out the match.
STATS AT A GLANCE
- Avery Hughes led the Gee-Gees with 12 kills. The Human Resource Management student from Golden, Colo., had a .304 kill percentage.
- First year Maxim Langevin recorded a career-high 22 assists while adding a service ace and two kills.
