Season recap: Four Gee-Gees compete at nationals to close out 2018
The Gee-Gees cross country teams competed at the RSEQ and U SPORTS championships to close out the 2018 interuniversity season
The Gee-Gees cross country teams competed at the RSEQ and U SPORTS championships to close out the 2018 interuniversity season, with veteran team members Rebecca Brennan and Nicholas Roberts leading the way down the home stretch.
Brennan was the top finisher among four Gee-Gees to compete at the U SPORTS 2018 National Championship at Queen's on November 10. The fourth-year Social Sciences student was making her first appearance at the cross country national championship, clocking in at 31:12.20 to place 79th overall in the field of 155 runners.
Magalie Babineau was within sight of Brennan, clocking in at 31:19.8 for an 85th place finish. It was also the first national championship result for Babineau, a Master's student in the Faculty of Medicine who previously ran for the University of Moncton. Brogan MacDougall of Queen's topped the field by a wide margin with a time of 27:48.6
In the men's event, Roberts crossed the finish line at 33:41.10 to take 89th place in the field of 160. Roberts, a third-year Human Kinetics student, returned to the national championship event after making his only previous appearance in 2016. First-year team member Nicholas Pedersen followed in 93rd place at 33.44.70. Connor Black of Guelph was the gold medallist with a time of 31:13.0
Prior to the U SPORTS National Championship, the team also ran as individuals at the RSEQ championship in Montreal. Again it was Brennan and Roberts with the top performances on the day for the Garnet and Grey – Brennan earned a tenth place finish while Roberts finished thirteenth.
