Bio

James ("Jim") Milton Courtright, PE was a world class athlete that played on multiple sports programs at uOttawa in the early 1930s. He moved to Ottawa as a teenager and decided to attend uOttawa where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He first began to develop his skills as a world class javelin thrower while at uOttawa. He ranked third in the country at javelin in 1934, improved to second in 1935 and in 1936 became the Canadian javelin champion.

His success at the javelin allowed him to be a part of the 1936 Canadian Olympic Team. He went on to win the gold medal at the 1938 British Empire Games, now known as the Commonwealth Games.

All the while, Jim continued to play varsity football, basketball, and competed in many of the other track and field events while at uOttawa.  Although his athletic career evolved around Javelin, Courtright still remains one of the best-rounded athletes to ever suit up for the uOttawa Gee-Gees football program. He was a member of the 1934 team.

Jim Courtwright passed away in 2003 at the age of 88.
