The University of Ottawa's Men's Basketball team returned to OUA action with a home-and-home against the Queen's Gaels. The two teams have been out of action since Nov. 27 with both teams coming into this weekend with perfect records. The Gee-Gees would be the only team to leave with theirs still intact.
The Garnet and Grey emerged 77-63 victors at ARC Gym in Kingston, before returning home to Montpetit for the first time in 2022, winning 72-70 in overtime.
The Gee-Gees showed no sign of rust after the long break – exploding for 19 points in the first quarter while limiting Queen's to six. This included a six-point quarter from Josh Inkumsah. Guillaume Pépin would end the game leading all Gee-Gees in points and rebounds, 16 and seven respectively. The Gaels were led by Quinton Gray who scored 20 points, shooting six for 18 from the field.
The Garnet and Grey started strong again on Saturday – scoring 15 while holding Queen's to five points through the first quarter. The Gaels fought back in the second and third quarters outscoring the Gee-Gees by 16 points. Led by Guillaume Pépin (24 pts./ 5 rebs.) and Gage Sabean (19 pts./ 4 rebs./ 3 asts.), the Gee-Gees were able to pull level in the dying seconds of the game.
A huge block by Sabean with 0.5 seconds left in the contest sent the two teams to overtime. It was in the extra frame that the Gee-Gees were able to pull out a small advantage they wouldn't cough up.
"I am proud of this team," said Gee-Gees head coach, James Derouin. "[Defence] is our identity, and when you look at giving up 70 points to the number two offence in the country, in overtime, and held them below 34 per cent shooting. We came up with big stops when we needed them and big shots when we needed them so I am just proud of this team."
"It was a real gut check win to be down by six three to go and pull it out."
Next up, the Gee-Gees head to the Raven's Nest to take on the number one team in the country, the Carleton Ravens. Capital Hoops tips-off 8:00 pm EST on Friday, Feb. 18.
