The Gee-Gees men's basketball team logged two wins in North Bay, sweeping the weekend series against the Nipissing Lakers. Ottawa now enters the final weekend of the regular season in second-place in the OUA East with a 12-2 record.
On Friday, a shorthanded Gee-Gees team fended off a late push by the Lakers to secure a 69-58 win. Throughout the game, the Gee-Gees were hampered by turnovers and cold shooting from beyond the arc, which they were able to overcome in the final minutes to close out the 11-point win.
Guillaume Pépin packed the stat line with 23 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Ottawa's starting frontcourt also impressed as Maxime Boursiquot logged 14 points and 10 rebounds while Josh Inkumsah added 14 points and five rebounds. Redshirt freshman guard Cole Newton continued his outstanding play of late, adding 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists for the Gee-Gees.
On Saturday afternoon, the Gee-Gees closed off the trip with a strong 19-point win, downing Nipissing 78-59. In the win, Inkumsah was the lightning rod, turning in a season-best 18 points and nine rebounds to lead Ottawa in the win.
In a fast paced game, the Gee-Gees and Lakers dualled back and forth though the early stages of the game. Later in the game, Ottawa took advantage of finding Inkumsah for quick points in the paint and dealing to Newton's hot hand beyond the arc to close out the win.
Pépin added 17 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and two assists to cap off a strong weekend. Dragan Stajic was everywhere for 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Finally, Newton finished with 11 points and six rebounds on the evening.
Up next, the Gee-Gees will host the Laurentian Voyageurs for the final weekend of the regular season before starting their playoff push. Friday's matchup is set for 8 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m. for the team's Seniors Celebration. Tickets are available online at tickets.geegees.ca
