The Gee-Gees men's basketball split their weekend series in Waterloo on Friday and Saturday, with a loss to Laurier and a win at Waterloo.
On Friday, the Gee-Gees came up short in against Laurier, falling 87-83 in an overtime battle with the Golden Hawks. With nine ties and 12 lead changes in the game, the teams were neck-and-neck with each other throughout the night. In the end, Ottawa's miscues, and Laurier's three-point execution spelled the Gee-Gees' second loss of the season.
Laurier scored 17 points to capitalize on Ottawa's 18 turnovers, and shot an even 50 per cent from three, hitting 12 on the night.
Brock Newton led the way for the Gee-Gees with 19 points on 9-15 shooting, the Fergus, Ont. native also added seven rebounds and two assists. Cole Newton (14 pts. / 6 reb. / 4 ast.) led other Gee-Gees scorers, with Josh Inkumsah (13 pts. / 8 reb.), Kevin Otoo (13 pts. / 7 reb.) and Guilluame Pépin (11 pts. / 6 reb.) also chipping in double-figure scoring performances.
On Saturday evening, Ottawa rallied to return to the win column with a 66-54 victory over the Waterloo Warriors. Battling back from a 10-point first half deficit, the Gee-Gees were dominant in the second half to secure the win and move to 9-2 on the season.
Overcoming 13 turnovers in the first half, Ottawa settled in on offence in the third quarter, outscoring Waterloo 18-5 in the frame to build a sustainable lead in the later stages of the game.
Pépin was the team's leading scorer with 19 points and six rebounds. Josh Inkumsah also impressed with a 17-point, seven-rebound effort in the win. Playing in his hometown, Dragan Stajic logged a well-balanced six points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Up next, the Gee-Gees will return home to host the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks and Guelph Gryphons in a rare Saturday-Sunday weekend at Montpetit.
