The Gee-Gees men's basketball team closed their final regular season weekend at Montpetit Hall with wins over OUA East foes Nipissing and Laurentian on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, the Gee-Gees were dominant in the paint, using high percentage looks to down the Lakers by a final score of 81-62.
Responding to a competitive first quarter, Ottawa blew out Nipissing in the second and third quarters, building their lead as high as 23 points at the end of the third. Despite being narrowly outscored by Nipissing in the final frame, the Gee-Gees still secured a comfortable 19-point victory.
On Saturday, the Gee-Gees capped off a strong weekend as they powered to a 33-point win over Laurentian.
Once again, the teams battled evenly in the first frame with the Voyageurs holding a two-point lead. In the second, the Gee-Gees erupted to outscore Laurentian 32-12 and would go on to build a 35-point lead late in the game to round out the lopsided victory.
Along with highlight dunks and key three-pointers, Ottawa celebrated their seniors in style in the exciting win.
STATS AT A GLANCE:
Against Nipissing, Brock Newton led the way with 16 points on 7-8 shooting. Ottawa had three other players scoring in double figures, with Cole Newton loging 15 points and nine rebounds, Josh Inkumsah with 13 points and five rebounds, and Guillaume Pépin with 12 points and three rebounds and assists.
Against Laurentian, Jacques-Mélaine Guemeta put on a dazzling display with 18 points, and six rebounds. Brock Newton added another 16 points, Pépin had 14, Cole Newton had 12, and Dragan Stajic rounded out top performers with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
"Three convincing wins in a row is great for the team. It's great to get our offence back on track and clicking a little bit more, it was our offence that struggled in the two games we lost. I'd still like our shooting to catch up, but we were able to create some twos in transition which we've been working on, so I'm happy with that." – James Derouin, Head Coach.
UP NEXT:
Ottawa will travel down the Rideau Canal to Carleton for the Bytown Battle on Wednesday night. Tip off against the Ravens in the regular season finale is set for 8 p.m. The game will be streaming live on OUA.tv.
