Just 24 hours removed from an emotionally draining loss against the rival Carleton Ravens, some wondered how the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees men's hockey team would respond at home against the Concordia Stingers.
The Gee-Gees emphatically reminded fans and observers why the team is among the best in the country, drubbing the Stingers in a 8-1 victory.
"After a disappointing loss yesterday, it's fun to come back and win this game," Head Coach Patrick Grandmaître said following the game. "You don't have too many games like this in a season, especially against teams like that. It's fun to have a game where you feel you're in control the whole game."
Ottawa opened the game by jumping out to an early lead. Kevin Domingue scored on the first shot on goal of the night, while a short-handed goal from Brendan Jacome midway through the frame bolstered momentum in the Gee-Gees' favour.
"After the second goal, it gave us confidence. Just because we lost one game doesn't mean we're a bad team," Grandmaître said.
While Concordia cut the deficit with a power play goal, Domingue restored the two goal lead moments later with a spectacular effort, toe dragging through a defender before roofing a shot.
Ottawa fully dominated the second period, with Domingue scoring a third goal to mark his first career hat trick, while Jean-François Plante, Mathieu Newcomb, Cody Drover, and Eric Locke adding goals to create a seven goal lead that held steady through the course of the contest.
"With the loss last night, the emotion, it felt great to get back in the win column," Domingue said.
Domingue, along with linemates Cody Drover and Brendan Jacome have paced the Ottawa offence this season, scoring 12 points combined on the night and 37 through 12 games.
"They know I have a shooting mentality," Domingue said on their chemistry. "I just need to be ready to get the puck on the blade, and be confident in my shot and their playmaking abilities. We have a lot of speed, we're hard to play against."
Newcomb's goal marked his first of the year, snapping a drought that persisted despite his solid contributions in all areas of the ice this season.
"Newcomb, Ward, and Deacon, those guys sometimes get pushed aside in some important minutes. It's good to allow those guys to freely play tonight," Grandmaître said.
With their final home game of the calendar year in the books, the Gee-Gees will carry a six game win streak at the Minto Sports Complex into the new year.
Up next, Ottawa will visit Carleton on Friday, November 23, then travel to Trois-Rivières to take on the UQTR Patriotes for the first time this season on Sunday, November 25.
