Coming off their first regulation loss of the season to Carleton on Friday night, it didn't take long for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees to battle back into the win column.
A come-from-behind 4-3 overtime win over the UQTR Patriotes, sparked by Brendan Jacome, allowed the Gee-Gees to storm out of Le Colisée in Trois-Rivières with a pair of points.
"I though we carried the play, had more shots and scoring opportunities than they did," Head Coach Patrick Grandmaître said following the game. "Discipline was a factor at times, but our penalty kill came through."
While Ottawa never led at any point in the contest, they carried the bulk of the play over the course of the contest. They outshot the Patriotes 41-35 and successfully killed all five penalties against.
Following a goal from UQTR midway through the opening frame, Jacome responded by collecting a puck, spinning around and splitting a defence then roofing the puck to tie the game.
A pair of goals from UQTR in the second pushed the Gee-Gees into a larger deficit, but it wasn't insurmountable.
A point shot from Jacob Sweeney somehow found the back of the net through a lane of bodies to pull Ottawa within one in the final seconds of the second period.
With newfound confidence, the Gee-Gees continued to pour pressure in the third, and another point shot, this time from Cody Van Lierop, found the back of the net just two minutes into the third.
Anthony Brodeur was stellar between the pipes, stopping all 19 shots from the Patriotes in the third to keep the game tied.
In the overtime frame, Ottawa turned to Jacome's hot hand. His foot speed allowed him to dash around a defender and roof the puck once more to clinch the victory.
"What can you say about Jacome, scoring two highlight reel goals. He deserves it, he's playing well at both ends of the ice," Grandmaître said.
The win helped snapped a brief losing streak that has dogged the Gee-Gees in UQTR since the program's rebirth. It marked the first win for Ottawa at Le Colisée, having been unsuccessful in trips over the past two seasons.
"We've never had a lot of success in this barn. This was our best game in three years here," Grandmaître said.
The Gee-Gees will return to practice for another week, before closing out the 2018 portion of the campaign with a two-game road trip to Oshawa to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks on Nov. 30, and the Queen's Gaels in Kingston on Dec. 1.
