Two scrappy goals from Brendan Jacome in the third period stunned the UQTR Patriotes, giving the Gee-Gees men's hockey team a 4-3 win and forcing a deciding third game in their OUA East semi-final series.
"The kid's a playoff performer," said Gee-Gees men's hockey head coach Patrick Grandmaître. "He might not always get the results, but we know we'll always get an honest game. It's good for him, but it's also good for our guys to get rewarded for their efforts. It would have been a shame for us to finish two in a row here."
The Patriotes took a 2-1 lead four minutes into the third period, with Nicolas Larivière poking one past Domenic Graham, who made 29 saves in the game.
At the midway point of the third, Jacome hopped on a loose puck after Kevin Domingue tied up his man on the faceoff. Jacome banged it past Auger to tie the game.
Jacome was back at it with under three minutes to go, again finding the back of the net from close range.
The Gee-Gees iced the game with a pair of empty net goals, forcing a massive confrontation in Trois-Rivières Sunday afternoon. Puck drop is scheduled from 3:00 p.m. at Le Colisée and it will be streamed on OUA.tv.
"Our guys are playing hard and it's really tough to play over there," said Grandmaître. "But I feel confident that it's going to be a close game again and it will be up for grabs at the end of the day over there."
This is the third consecutive season the Gee-Gees are playing in a game three in the OUA East semi-final. They lost both of those pivotal games; to McGill in 2018 and Queen's in 2019. Both of those teams went on to win the Queen's Cup.
