Brendan Jacome was named the OUA East winner of the prestigious Randy Gregg Award as part of the OUA's 2019-2020 Major Awards and All-Star Team announcement today. The fourth-year Gee-Gee is being recognized by the league for his excellence in academics, community involvement, and in hockey. In addition, Kevin Domingue was named to the conference First All-Star team, and defenceman Dominic Cormier was named to the All-Rookie Team.
The awards were announced as the Gee-Gees travel to Guelph to compete for the 109th Queen's Cup on Saturday, March 7. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. with a live webcast on OUA.tv for those fans not planning to travel to Guelph.
The Randy Gregg Award celebrates a student-athlete who is excelling in academics, community involvement, and hockey; something that Brendan Jacome has increasingly shown in his four years in Garnet and Grey. This season, Jacome has maintained a GPA of 8.5 in his Finance program in the Telfer School of Management while also ranking third on the Gee-Gees in scoring with 22 points. A three-time Academic All-Canadian, Jacome has been a leader on and off the ice for the Garnet and Grey. As a penalty killer, on the power play unit, or even strength, Jacome is ready to contribute in any situation. In the community, he leads the team's Movember campaign efforts, which have raised over $7,500 during his time as a Gee-Gee. He is also a strong supporter of the Hockey Gives Blood, Do it for Daron, and Pride Night activities that the Gee-Gees men's hockey team takes part in as well as volunteering his time each year with the Ottawa East minor hockey association. Jacome won the U SPORTS Most Sportsmanlike Player award in 2018-2019.
Jacome is the fourth Gee-Gee in program history to win the Randy Gregg award at the conference level, following Alain Tardif (1993-94), Jean-François Rivard (1995-96) and Rob Rideout (2003-04).
Kevin Domingue earns his second straight nod as an OUA First Team All-Star, leading the Gee-Gees and ranking eighth in the league with 34 points. His 18 goals was second in OUA, and included four game-winners for Ottawa this season. Domingue had a thirteen-game point streak for Ottawa midway through the season, and was held pointless in just six games of the 28-game regular season. The fourth-year forward has been remarkably consistent for the Garnet and Grey, as this is his third plus-thirty-point season and he has 71 goals over his four years with Ottawa (16-19-18-18), setting a new program career record.
Dominic Cormier was an impactful addition for Ottawa on the blueline, where he added twenty points and took just four penalty minutes this season while logging heavy ice time. His strong skating abilities were immediately evident from his first shift in Garnet and Grey, where he stood-out on international ice against professional teams in Germany. Cormier joined the program with the ability to provide offence from the blueline, but as the season progressed, he focused on improvements on defence to become a solid two-way player. Early in the season, he was pair with fellow rookie defenceman Nicolas Mattinen, and the duo combined to log heavy minutes over the course of the season and lengthy playoff run. The high-end potential showcased this season gives Gee-Gees fans plenty to be excited about in the years to come.
