The Gee-Gees and Ravens men's hockey teams combined for 15 goals in a thriller, but it was ultimately Carleton who emerged victorious by an 8-7 score in the Colonel By Classic.
Majid Kaddoura scored the game winner in the final minute of overtime before a packed Arena at TD Place.
"You couldn't have scripted a game any better than that for the fans," said Gee-Gees assistant coach Paul Stoykewych. "The no quit in our guys was unbelievable today. It's a disappointing result, but I'm really happy with our effort."
The back-and-forth affair will go down as one of the wildest games in U SPORTS this season. Neither team built more than a two-goal lead, although the Gee-Gees found themselves trailing by two goals on four different occasions, including in the final ten minutes of regulation.
Bradley Chenier completed a hat trick and Liam Markhauser scored with five minutes to go to force overtime. Anthony Poulin and Max Grondin also enjoyed multi-point games.
"It was a great experience – both schools were going at it, so it was fun," said Chenier. "It's a big point that we got, and we'll keep going. We were kind of trailing all game, but we stuck to the gameplan and kept fighting back."
The Gee-Gees fall to 1-4 all-time in the annual event, dropping their first game to the Ravens this season. The teams are not slated to play again in 2022-23, barring a meeting in the playoffs.
Factoring in the women's hockey team's victory in the Alerts Cup, Gee-Gees teams are now 11-2 against Carleton opposition this season.
The weekend got off to a roaring start on Friday night at home. The Gee-Gees turned in one of their most complete performances of the year against Nipissing, defeating the struggling Lakers 6-1.
A pair of second period shorthanded goals from Tommy Bouchard and Grondin were the difference. Charles-Antoine Roy also potted twice, with Daniel Hardie and birthday boy Chenier chipping in as well. Markhauser and Jean-Robin Mantha both enjoyed strong games, notching three assists apiece.
Jean-Philippe Tourigny was stellar, picking up his sixth win of the season while making 31 saves. The Gee-Gees concluded their season series with the Lakers at 3-0, outscoring their opponent 17-4.
Markhauser was the player of the weekend. The Ottawa product notched a goal and five assists across the two games, more than doubling his point total on the season.
Gee-Gees head coach Patrick Grandmaitre wrapped up the 2023 FISU World University Games with the Canadian men's hockey team Sunday. Coincidently, at nearly the exact second Kaddoura's game-winning goal went in, the final horn sounded at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y., giving Canada a 7-2 win over the Americans in the gold medal game.
