The Gee-Gees men's hockey team started the weekend with a 4-3 loss to the Concordia Stingers on Thursday night. The team got back on track on Saturday with a dominant 4-1 win over Ontario Tech.
Concordia opened up the scoring early in the first period. Vincent Labelle responded with a powerplay goal, and moments later, Nick Bowman gave Ottawa the 2-1 lead.
The second period was plentiful for the Stingers, who logged three goals throughout. Bradley Chenier managed to keep the Gee-Gees in reach with a goal of his own, but the home team trailed 4-3 heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
A scoreless third period meant the Gee-Gees saw their seven-game winning streak come to a close on home ice.
Ottawa head coach, Patrick Grandmaître expressed confidence in his team despite the loss.
"We can't win every game. The team lacked discipline tonight and got burned at times by the opponent's speed." Grandmaître said. "It was obviousy not a great game, but I am positive the team will bounce back on Saturday."
The Gee-Gees did exactly that. Bowman kicked things off with an Ottawa goal in the opening three minutes against Ontario Tech. There was a hiccup as the Gee-Gees allowed a shorthanded goal in the second period, but the team took over in the final 20 minutes.
Heading into the third period 1-1, Mathieu Desgagnes logged a goal at the seven-minute mark to gain the edge. With less than two minutes on the clock, Ontario Tech went into desperation, pulling their goalie in hopes of tying things up.
Anthony Poulin and Chenier each put in empty net goals, ending the game at 4-1.
"This was a great win, but a quick glance at the calendar shows that we have a really tough schedule ahead of us," Grandmaitre said. "I am happy with the way the team responded and feel very confident with where we are and where we're heading."
The Gee-Gees will be on the road for a Friday night game at McGill, before heading back to Minto Sports Complex to host York on Jan. 20 for a 3 p.m. puck drop. Tickets for the Gee-Gees home games are available at https://teams.geegees.ca/tickets
