RECAP: Gee-Gees swimmers show well at RSEQ Cup 4
The Gee-Gees swimming teams competed at the final University Cup event of the season over the weekend in Quebec City hosted by Université Laval.
The Gee-Gees swimming teams competed at the final University Cup event of the season over the weekend in Quebec City hosted by Université Laval. Overall, the team did very well with the women's team finishing third and the men's team finishing fourth in their respective standings.
There were a number of standout individual performances tuned in over the weekend as well, which included 11 individual swimmers placing in the top five of their respective races. Going into the meet, the men's team was ranked fourth in U SPORTS while the women's team was ranked eighth.
Highlighting the individual performances for the Gee-Gees, was two time U SPORTS national medalist Davide Casarin who was named the male athlete of the meet after leading all male swimmers by totaling 791 points over the weekend. Casarin did so by dominating the field on way to finishing first in the 200m freestyle in 1:50.26, beating the next closest swimmer by more than four seconds. Casarin also finished first in the 1500m freestyle in a time of 16:05.45, and rounded out his meet with a second place finish in the 200m backstroke event in 2:07.34.
Delphine Vandal had an excellent meet as she finished first in the 800m freestyle in a time of 9:06.45 which qualifies her for the Senior National Championships and Trials. Vandal also finished fifth in the 200m freestyle in a time of 2:06.38.
Other standout performers for the Gee-Gees were fourth place finishers, Kate Nielson in the women's 400m IM (5:16.86), Montana Champagne in the men's 200m freestyle (1:56.12), Sara Gordon in the women's 50m freestyle (26.85), Aleksandar Plackoski in the men's 100m butterfly (58.16), and Adelle Yamashita-Ball in the women's 800m freestyle (9:21.43).
Rounding out the top finishers for the Gee-Gees were fifth place finishes by Lauren Shearer in the 100m women's breaststroke (1:15.57), Jamie Demers in the men's 100m breaststroke (1:07.55), Anne Marie Kaczmarczyk in the women's 400m IM (5:17.53), and Zachary Pilling in the men's 50m breaststroke (30.39).
This was the final University Cup event before the RSEQ championships which will be held Feb. 1-3 at Université de Montreal.
