he Gee-Gees women's rugby team jumped out to a 10-0 lead early against the Montreal Carabins on Saturday evening at home and carried through with a 49-7 victory. The nationally number-one ranked Gee-Gees squad showed its power across the lineup, with eight players scoring tries in the contest on a balanced attack. Ottawa now holds a 3-0 record in 2018 RSEQ regular season play.
Following Emily Gray and Alexandra Ondo's opening tries, the Gee-Gees piled on two more to take a 22-0 lead into halftime. The pair of scoring plays were impressive with Ellen Murphy powering past three would-be tacklers and Sam Alli going for an evasive 70-yard run.
"Looking at each other, we know that your team mates are giving their everything," explains Alli of the team's ability to keep the pressure on. "That's Gee-Gees rugby and we play for each other."
The Gee-Gees started the second half off just as quickly as the first, adding a pair of quick scores to stretch the lead to 34-0 with 30 minutes left to play. Maya Montiel, Emily Babcock, Gray, and first years Tylo Borsboom and Emma Wade scored tries in the second half.
Late in the match, Alli made another impressive long run in an effort to stop Montreal's Neomi Tshinkenke, closing ground to make a tackle just in front of the try line. Montreal was awarded a penalty try on the play which accounted for the final score.
"Defence is the biggest part of our game – we work on that every single practice," says Alli. "Every point that the opponent scores is going to matter."
"I think our tight five came together today as a unit," added head coach Jen Boyd. "I thought they really dominated today and got us going forward. They're really coming together nicely."
