RECAP: Women’s rugby drops home opener to Laval
After the 28-17 loss to the Rouge et Or, the Gee-Gees will look to rebound against Carleton next week.
For the first time since 2012, the Gee-Gees women's rugby team dropped a game against their rival, the Laval Rouge et Or falling by a score of 28-17 in their home opener.
The Gee-Gees jumped out of the gate with a hot start. Second row Michaela Haley tallied the first try of the game in the 10th minute, while the team added to their lead with a second try in the waning moments of the first half to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.
Momentum shifted in the second half, with Laval racing the ball up the field and scoring a pair of tries within the opening six minutes of the second half to tie the game.
A converted penalty kick in the 55th minute restored the Gee-Gees' lead, but Laval was quick to answer back with another pair of tries to stretch their lead to 28-17. With only a handful of minutes remaining on the clock, the Garnet and Grey were ultimately unable to complete the comeback.
A new schedule format this ensure an Ottawa-Laval rematch will happen this regular season. The Gee-Gees will travel to Quebec City to take on Laval on Sept. 28.
The team will now shift their focus to their upcoming road game against the Carleton Ravens. Kick off from Raven Road Field is set for this Friday at 6 p.m.
The next home game will feature the Gee-Gees taking on the Sherbrooke Vert et Or for their second head-to-head game this season.
Action at Matt Anthony Field will be underway at 2 p.m. on Sept. 21. Tickets are available now at tickets.geegees.ca
