In what has become tradition over the past handful of years, the Gee-Gees women's rugby team took on the Carleton Ravens Friday night, preceding the Panda Game and teeing up a rivalry weekend.
Behind the offensive power of Maddie Grant and Michaela Haley, the Gee-Gees defeated the Ravens 47-10 to close their RSEQ regular season schedule.
Grant wasted no time giving the Gee-Gees the lead, scoring her first of three tries on the night in the second minute of play. The offensive attack did not stop there, as the Gee-Gees rolled up the score to 26-0 heading into halftime.
The Ravens had their first response of the night on a try in the 52nd minute, before the Grant and the Gee-Gees immediately responded to take a 40-5 lead. Carleton scored for a final time in the 60th minute, however, six minutes later the Ottawa lead grew further on a penalty try credited to Grant.
Haley added two more tries to bring her season total to an RSEQ leading 11. Grant closes her freshman campaign with 7, tied for second in the conference.
Rebounding from their second loss of the season at the hands of Laval, the Gee-Gees still find themselves in favourable position heading into the playoffs. Finishing second in the conference's top division, the Gee-Gees cannot face the Rouge et Or until a possible RSEQ final.
Of course, on the horizon is the 2019 U SPORTS Rugby Championship, where the team already has a guaranteed host berth. First will come the push for another RSEQ Championship, something the team is taking one step at a time.
"We go week to week," said head coach Jen Boyd. "We just talk about the process and keep it really simple for them."
"We have a week of training, and then the girls will get to enjoy their Thanksgiving weekend off, because we have a bye, which is something we've never been able to have. We'll reload again and have another good week of practice and be ready for whoever we're going to play in the semi."
Up next, the Gee-Gees will host the highest remaining seed for the semi-finals at Matt Anthony Field on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.
