RECAP: #4 Women’s rugby takes down Carabins in home opener
A pair of tries from Ngozi Mosindi punctuated an outstanding offensive showing by the Gee-Gees women's rugby program, which defeated the Montreal Carabins 34-0 at Matt Anthony Field Saturday afternoon.
Tylo Borsboom, Claire Gallagher, Talia Hennessy and Rachel Steel provided reinforcements for Ottawa.
"It wasn't the cleanest game on our part, but we're happy we held them to a shutout," said Gallagher, who accounted for nine total points (one try, two converts). "We're looking for a slow upward build throughout the season, so it's ok we're not peaking right now."
Much like in their season opening matchup with the Concordia Stingers last week, the Gee-Gees found paydirt early and often. Borsboom opened the scoring ten minutes in, before Mosindi scored back-to-back tries.
The scoring looked to be done in the first half when Gallagher fielded a loose ball and darted up field. Surrounded by blue shirts, Gallagher booted the ball forward, ran it down herself and fell on it on the try zone for an incredible solo effort.

"I saw there was no one back," said Gallagher, who now has 30 total points on the season. "I got the ball alone at the back and I sort of had to go myself. It was pretty lucky I got the ball back [after the kick] and scored."
Steel would get her first career score early in the second half, getting in for her first try as a Gee-Gee. A strong showing defensively from Ottawa earned them their first shutout of the season – they earned two in 2021.
Ottawa (2-0) improves earns a bonus point for scoring four-or-more tries in a single match, and find themselves atop the RSEQ standings. They'll travel to Montreal to take on McGill (0-2) on Sept. 17, before returning to Matt Anthony Field for a match with Bishop's (1-0) on Sept. 24. Tickets for the game are on sale at tickets.geegees.ca.
Montreal (0-2) are back in Ottawa next week to play Carleton (2-0).
