The Gee-Gees women's soccer team managed just a draw in their weekend twin bill against the sixth ranked Queen's Gaels and the Toronto Varsity Blues.
Ottawa tied Queen's 1-1 Friday evening and lost 1-0 to Toronto Sunday afternoon. Both games were played at Matt Anthony Field.
Cassandra Provost opened the scoring for Ottawa on Friday in the first half. The second year forward sent the capacity crowd at Matt Anthony Field into a frenzy when she took advantage of a Gaels mistake to score her conference-leading fifth goal of the season.
Sprawling saves from goalkeepers Juliann Lacasse and Cassidy Joslin maintained the lead, before Raya Athwal thumped a shot past Joslin to level the score early in the second half. The match was hotly contested with both teams generating quality scoring chances throughout, but the two nationally ranked combatants settled for a 1-1 draw.
"Both teams are really good and we have the same style of play," said Provost of the Gaels. "It's hard to play against them and almost like playing against yourself. Both teams had chances."
The Gee-Gees then fell 1-0 to Toronto on Sunday afternoon – the program's first regular season loss since a 3-1 defeat to Nipissing on Sept. 16, 2018. Despite Ottawa firing 29 shots compared to Toronto's three, the Garnet and Grey failed to find the back of the net.
Lindsey Bosveld got the goal for the Varsity Blues in the 30th minute.
Ottawa (2-1-1) looks to get back in the win column at home on Sunday, Sept. 18 against the Nipissing Lakers (2-0-0). Tickets for the game are on sale at tickets.geegees.ca and the match will be streamed live on OUA.tv.
