RECAP: Gee-Gees women’s soccer wins program’s 11th national medal with U SPORTS Bronze
On Sunday in Quebec City, the Gee-Gees women's soccer team won the U SPORTS Bronze Medal with a 3-0 win over the Cape Breton Capers at Stade Telus-UL.
With the win, Ottawa pushes their medal tally to 11 in program history, which includes two national titles, four silvers, and five bronzes.
In the game, the Gee-Gees dominated possession from kickoff, repeatedly pressuring the Capers defence throughout the opening stages.
Breaking away on streak to the net, Cassandra Provost collided with the keeper, with a sore arm, Provost continued to play and scored the first goal of the match on an assist from Soumaya Bouak in the 26th minute.
In the second half, Ottawa continued to dominate as their offensive attack wore on Cape Breton. In the 62nd minute, Angelina Gendreau converted a penalty kick to extend the Gee-Gees lead.
The Gee-Gees put the finishing touches on the win in the 73rd minute, when Katerine Delev scored a penalty kick goal to cap off her career in garnet and grey. Delev was also named Nike Player of the Game for her efforts in clinching the Gee-Gees' medal.
Three Ottawa players were named to the Championship All-Star Team, with Kayla Kyle, Delev, and Provost earning the honours.
"We're really proud of our performance here at nationals," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "I think we showed the quality of our players, the program is in really good shape with the people that we have and the people we have returning."
Speaking on Delev's impact over the course of the tournament and her career, Johnson had high praise for the team's captain.
"I'm so, so happy that she got recognized as Player of the Game, I think she's had a fantastic tournament, and she's capped off just a wonderful five seasons for us."
