The U SPORTS eighth-ranked Gee-Gees men's basketball team flexed both their offensive and defensive muscles in a dominating win over the York Lions. The 92-58win on Friday night at Montpetit Hall was one of the Gee-Gees' most lopsided on the season so far.Ottawa's record now improves to with a 11-4 which places them in comfortable standing in the OUA East.
Third-year forward GageSabean led the way for the Gee-Gees on the night, scoring a game-high 25 points, aided by five three-pointers. First-year guard Kevin Civil had a standout night off of the bench, scoring 18 points on 60 per cent shooting from the field and from three. Brandon Robinson and Calvin Epistola had 11 points in the win, while Mackenzie Morrison added 10. Guillaume Pépin's also posted a strong nine-point, 12-rebound performance.
The Gee-Gees stepped on the gas pedal and never let up, they established an 11-point lead after the first frame, followed by a 20-point lead at half.In the third quarter, the team's lead grew to as much as 34, which stood as the eventual margin of victory.
"The defence was the difference today," said Gee-Gees head coach James Derouin. "We really frustrated them in the first half and early third. That set the tone for the game, they're a good offensive team statistically, but we shut down their scoring. Gage came out firing which was great, and it was a big performance from Kevin tonight, it was probably his best game as a Gee-Gee."
As a team, the Gee-Gees shot a stellar 50.8 per cent from the field, to go along with 48.3 per cent from beyond the arc, making 14 threes throughout the game.
"We're now hitting the home stretch," said Sabean, ahead of the Gee-Gees playing six of the remaining eight games in Ottawa. "Being on the road for six straight games was probably the toughest schedule I've had since I've been here. So it's really nice to get back and hit some shots and get the flow back."
Echoing Sabean's sentiments, Civil explained a focus shift following the team's tough road stand.
"It feels really good to win this one," he said. "After the loss against Laurentian we've been in practice focusing on how to get better each and every day. Tomorrow we have Queen's, so we know we have to be better. If we keep getting better every day, we can compete for an OUA championship."
Ottawa will now set their sights on Eastern Ontario rival, the Queen's Gaels (8-7). The teams will meet on Saturday night at Montpetit Hall, with tip-off set for 8 p.m. The game will be streamed live on OUA.tv.
