RECAP: #5 Ottawa rolls in wins over Brock and McMaster
The Gee-Gees men’s basketball team closed out their regular season with two home wins.
FEB. 14 vs BROCK
Closing the regular season at home, the Gee-Gees first faced off with the Brock Badgers on Friday night. Trailing following the first quarter, Ottawa stormed back to take control of the game and close out a 81-58 win.
Early in the second quarter, Guillaume Pépin spearheaded a run to give Ottawa the lead that sat at a humble four points at halftime.
The wheels came off for the Badgers in the fourth quarter, where the Gee-Gees outscored them 21-7 to lock up the 23-point win.
It was a complete balanced effort for the Gee-Gees who saw 10 different players register a point in the win. Ottawa shot 46.7 per cent from the field and 37.9 per cent from three. The Gee-Gees scored 19 points off of turnovers, and got 34 points of production from their bench unit.
Gage Sabean led the way with 14 points, hitting four three-pointers. Calvin Epistola had 12 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Charles-Antione Gaba and Guillaume Pépin both logged 12 points, with Gaba finishing with six rebounds.
FEB. 15 vs MCMASTER
On Seniors' Night at Montpetit, the Gee-Gees capped off the final regular season games of Calvin Epistola and Sean Stoqua's careers with a 98-82 win over the McMaster Marauders.
Though the two teams played evenly though the early goings, the Gee-Gees eventually cruised to as much as a 23-point lead to securing the win.
Stoqua hit a key three-pointer to get the Gee-Gees out of trouble early, and Epistola seized the momentum to dominate the game.
Epistola and Pépin showed out on the evening, finishing with 28 and 22 points respectively. Epistola logged six assists, while Pépin tallied seven rebounds. Of note, Charles-Antione Gaba reached a new career-high in scoring to cap off his first season.
The first year Montreal product scored 14 points, shooting 7-9 from the field and grabbing six rebounds in 18 minutes of play.
Kevin Civil rounded out players in double-figures with 12 points, as well as packing his stat line with seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals.
With the win, the Gee-Gees close the regular season on a six-game winning streak and finish with the second-best record in the OUA at 18-4. Due to OUA Playoff structure, Ottawa secured the fourth seed as each of the three division winners are guaranteed the top three seeds.

The Gee-Gees have a first-round bye meaning they will wait to find out their opponent for the quarterfinals on Saturday. Guelph is set to take on Ryerson in Toronto on Wednesday night, with the victor travelling to Ottawa for Saturday's matchup at 8 p.m.
