The Gee-Gees closed the 2019-20 season on Sunday afternoon with a 88-75 loss to the Alberta Golden Bears in the U SPORTS Consolation Final at the Ravens' Nest.
Both teams battled evenly in the early stages of the game, but through the mid-way point of the game was the Golden Bears who were dominant. Alberta outscored Ottawa 26-16 and 27-19 in the second and third quarters, sealing a lead that was too steep for the Gee-Gees to traverse.
The Gee-Gees outscored Alberta 24-19 in the final frame to bring the game's final score within a 13-point margin.
A heartwarming moment came when Calvin Epistola and Sean Stoqua left the floor for the final time in their careers. After a healthy round of applause and time spent hugging coaches and teammates, the pair of guards who have had massive impact officially closed their collegiate careers.
Epistola led the way for Ottawa in his final career game for the Gee-Gees. Guilluame Pépin continued his outstanding play with 13 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Kevin Civil was the other double-digit scorer, with 10 points and three steals off the bench.
Overall, Pépin was the team's top performer over the course of the tournament. The second year Montreal product averaged 17 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. Pépin shot 42.5 per cent from the field and a whopping 66.7 per cent from beyond the arc.
Epistola registered 16.3 points per game, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists, while shooting 52.8 per cent from three.
The Gee-Gees close their season of play and will return to the court in late summer for their annual exhibition slate of games.
